The Story Behind Capital Tea

A few years ago, I was inspired to create a support group. I was working at a different nonprofit and it was evident to me that there was a lack of Trans community and that needed to change. One day at work, I met a young trans woman, new to town and recently diagnosed with HIV. She was afraid and had nobody to turn to. She too felt the need for a community. That’s when I first spoke to her about the idea of a support group called Capital Tea. Her excitement was confirmation that I was not alone.  This was the beginning of Capital Tea. People from all over the Trans spectrum began to show up at our meeting. And we began creating community, friendships, and healing.

Fast forward two years, and it’s snowballed into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Over the years, we’ve faced many challenges; however, they got us where we are today. I am blessed to call the team we’ve created my family. Together, we encompass multiple experiences within the trans-femme spectrum. Because of our lived experience, we are determined to make the future easier and more accessible for the revolutionary Trans community. Today, the young woman who came scared into my office is my President. I am Executive Director, doing the work I was chosen to do. Together, we create a brighter, safer tomorrow so that our youth does not have to face the challenges we did. We will bring equality, visibility, and power to the Trans community
